Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that involve harmful patterns of eating behaviors and a distorted relationship with food. Common types include anorexia nervosa, characterized by extreme food restriction and an intense fear of gaining weight; bulimia nervosa, marked by cycles of binge eating followed by purging; and binge eating disorder, where individuals uncontrollably consume large amounts of food without purging afterward. These disorders are often driven by underlying emotional struggles, such as low self-esteem, anxiety, or a need for control, and they can significantly impact a person's physical health, leading to malnutrition, organ damage, and other life-threatening complications.

Managing Eating Disorders

The good news is that effective treatment is available.  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a focus on Eating disorders is a specialized subset of CBT that was created specifically to help individuals struggling in their relationship with body image and food. With strict adherence it has been shown to be highly effective at treating Bulimia, Anorexia and Binge Eating disorders.
