Understanding Adult ADHD
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning. Symptoms of inattention include difficulty focusing, frequent forgetfulness, and being easily distracted, while hyperactivity manifests as restlessness, excessive talking, or difficulty staying still. Impulsivity is seen in behaviors like interrupting others, making hasty decisions, or struggling with self-control. These symptoms may vary in intensity and can lead to challenges in academic, social, and occupational settings. ADHD is often diagnosed in childhood but can persist into adulthood.
Managing Adult ADHD
The good news is that ADHD can be successfully managed in a variety of ways. Often medication is used to help manage the inattention and hyperactivity. Therapy, in particular, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be an alternative to medication or used in conjunction with it. The focus of CBT in therapy is to help think about tasks, themselves, and the world differently along with encouraging the creation of structure to help create focus, increase motivation, and manage impulsivity while harnessing the natural creativity found in ADHD to a positive end.
