Understanding Mood Disorders

Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, are mental health conditions characterized by significant disruptions in a person’s emotional state. These disorders can lead to persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability, fatigue, isolation, negative self talk and in severe cases suicidal thoughts. In other cases individuals may experience discrete periods of highly elevated mood, engage in risky behaviors, and experience grandiose thinking that can last up to or over a week in a manic episode.

Managing Mood Disorders

These symptoms may severely affect an individuals ability to function in daily life. Mood disorders may arise from a combination of genetic, biochemical, environmental, and psychological factors, and they often coexist with other mental health issues, including anxiety disorders.  The gold standard for treatment of depression is CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy which was specifically designed to help manage this disorder.
